"About a year ago, I was rolling up on my 40th birthday. I had been married to my husband for 18 years. Our sex life hadn’t been anything to write home about for at least two. I was at least 100 lbs overweight and I woke up one day and clearly thought. “About half of my life is over, is this all there is? Can I live my life this way for the next 40?” So as I reflected on what I wanted and needed to change I realized that I hated myself.
Not like I hated the way I looked or the way clothes fit me, but actually hated myself. I started listening to the things that I said to myself and they were awful. Mean and terrible things that I would never say to another person was common for me to say to myself.
I told myself that I didn’t deserve a body I loved. That it was ok to have an unfulfilling sex life. That I wasn’t important enough to change my health, my physical appearance, the way I interacted with the world.
For some reason, this way of treating myself suddenly became unbearable. Maybe it was a midlife crisis. Maybe it was just an awakening. I told my husband that I couldn’t continue this way.
So the past year for me has been a journey of finding and loving myself. Loving my strengths and weaknesses. Learning that the voice that belongs to my father that lives inside my head doesn’t have to be the winner. Learning that how I fuel my body and move my body is just another way that I can love myself.
I’ve lost 64 lbs and would like to lose another 40. But I did this photo shoot with Nazla now because I finally feel like I’m worth it. Even if I don’t lose the weight. Even if I have hard days. Even if I am not always comfortable in my body. Even if I have things that I’m working on, I’m worth showing myself love.
During my session Nazla said to me, “I love to do these with women because I can show them how I see them” In Nazla’s camera she captured me as stunning, brave, sexy, bold and beautiful. And I feel it."
